Obama appoints 34yr old Nigerian, Adewale Adeyemo as his new deputy adviser for International Economic affairs

United States President, Barack Obama has appointed a Nigerian national Adewale Adeyemo, to succeed Caroline Atkinson as his deputy national security adviser for international economic affair, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Adewale "Wally" Adeyemo,34, joined the White House's National Economic Council as deputy director this fall from the Treasury, where he served most recently as the deputy chief of staff to Secretary Jacob Lew.

Ms. Atkinson has served in her current post since June 2013, a position that includes coordinating U.S. participation in the annual summits of the Group of 20 and Group of Seven countries. Ms. Atkinson also played key roles in the recently concluded climate negotiations in Paris.

Mr. Adeyemo was the Treasury’s lead negotiator on the currency agreement that was part of the Pacific trade deal. He also worked on Treasury’s response to crises in Ukraine and Greece and in 2010 was one of the first officials charged with standing up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

In a statement, Mr. Obama thanked Ms. Atkinson for her service and said he was grateful that Mr. Adeyemo would carry on her work. Mr. Adeyemo had been nominated by Mr. Obama to serve as assistant Treasury secretary for international markets and development, but a White House official said Mr. Adeyemo had asked the president to withdraw the nomination given his new role.

The statement from Obama reads:

"For the past four years, I have relied on Caroline Atkinson, most recently as my Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics, as we’ve navigated pressing challenges to the global economy.

"As my representative at the G-7 and G-20, she played a key role in coordinating our response to international financial crises, worked with our allies to devise and implement targeted economic sanctions to advance our national security goals, played a vital role in our economic engagements with China, and helped to achieve breakthrough agreements on climate that will strengthen our economy and our security.

"I’ve relied on, and benefited from, Caroline’s knowledge and judgment and, as she concludes her tenure on my national security team, I am deeply appreciative of her service.

"I am grateful that Caroline’s work will be carried on by Adewale “Wally” Adeyemo, who has served in my administration since 2009. At the Treasury Department, he was part of the team that helped coordinate our response to the global recession, laying the foundation for renewed growth at home and abroad.

“He helped establish the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and he’s been our point person on a range of international economic issues, including negotiations on strong currency agreements around the Trans Pacific Partnership. I will be calling on Wally’s intellect, judgment and dedication as we sustain America’s global economic leadership, which reinforces our national security, and as we work with allies and partners around the world to create jobs and opportunity for all our people."

On his part, Mr. Lew said that Mr. Adeyemo had "developed a network of international relationships in economic offices around the world to promote U.S. interests effectively."

Former Treasury Secretary Tim Geihner said Mr. Adeyemo, who joined the administration in 2009, was a “natural diplomat with a great feel for policy."

The position has served as a springboard to even higher profile international finance posts.Mochael Froman, who is currently the U.S. trade representative, held the post under both Mr. Obama and President Bill Clinton.Federal Reserve governor Lael Brainard , who previously served as a senior Treasury official in the Obama administration, held the post in the Clinton administration.

Dollar hits N249 at parallel market

Naira-Dollar

The Naira on Wednesday continued to depreciate at the parallel market as it exchanged for N249 to the dollar. The naira lost N1 on Wednesday afternoon to close at N249, as against its previous value of N248.

It, however, appreciated at the official interbank window as it gained N0.03 to close at N196.97. Traders at the parallel market affirmed that the challenges at the Bureaux de Change continued to have its toll on the parallel market.

The inability of some BDCs to render proper accounts of forex transactions earned about 1600 of them some sanction from the apex bank. Meanwhile, the high cost of dollar had been having multiplier effects on most import-based businesses, leading to unhealthy price increases.

Harry Potter: The Phiilosopher's Stone

CHAPTER TWO A
THE VANISHING GLASS
Nearly ten years had passed since the Dursleys had woken up to find their nephew on the front step, but Privet Drive had hardly changed at all. The sun rose on the same tidy front gardens and lit up the brass number four on the Dursleys' front door; it crept into their living room, which was almost exactly the same as it had been on the night when Mr. Dursley had seen that fateful news report about the owls. Only the photographs on the mantelpiece really showed how much time had passed.
Ten years ago, there had been lots of pictures of what looked like a large pink beach ball wearing different-colored bonnets -- but Dudley Dursley was no longer a baby, and now the photographs showed a large blond boy riding his first bicycle, on a carousel at the fair, playing a computer game with his father, being hugged and kissed by his mother. The room held no sign at all that another boy lived in the house, too. Yet Harry Potter was still there, asleep at the moment, but not for long. His Aunt Petunia was awake and it was her shrill voice that made the first noise of the day.
"Up! Get up! Now!"
Harry woke with a start. His aunt rapped on the door again.
"Up!" she screeched. Harry heard her walking toward the kitchen and then the sound of the frying pan being put on the stove. He rolled onto his back and tried to remember the dream he had been having. It had been a  good one. There had been a flying motorcycle in it. He had a funny feeling he'd had the same dream before.
His aunt was back outside the door. "Are you up yet?" she demanded.
"Nearly," said Harry. "Well, get a move on, I want you to look after the bacon. And don't you dare let it burn, I want everything perfect on Duddy's birthday."
Harry groaned.
"What did you say?" his aunt snapped through the door.
"Nothing, nothing..."
Dudley's birthday -- how could he have forgotten? Harry got slowly out of bed and started looking for socks. He found a pair under his bed and, after pulling a spider off one of them, put them on. Harry was used to spiders, because the cupboard under the stairs was full of them, and that was where he slept. When he was dressed he went down the hall into the kitchen. The table was almost hidden beneath all Dudley's birthday presents. It looked as though Dudley had gotten the new computer he wanted, not to mention the second television and the racing bike. Exactly why Dudley wanted a racing bike was a mystery to Harry, as Dudley was very fat and hated exercise -- unless of course it involved punching somebody. Dudley's favorite punching bag was Harry, but he couldn't often catch him. Harry didn't look it, but he was very fast.
Perhaps it had something to do with living in a dark cupboard, but Harry had always been small and skinny for his age. He looked even smaller and skinnier than he really was because all he had to wear were old clothes of Dudley's, and Dudley was about four times bigger than he was. Harry had a thin face, knobbly knees, black hair, and bright green eyes. He wore round glasses held together with a lot of Scotch tape because of all the times Dudley had punched him on the nose. The only thing Harry liked about his own appearance was a very thin scar on his forehead that was shaped like a bolt of lightning. He had had it as long as he could remember, and the first question he could ever remember asking his Aunt Petunia was how he had gotten it.
"In the car crash when your parents died," she had said. "And don't ask
questions."
Don't ask questions -- that was the first rule for a quiet life with the Dursleys.
Uncle Vernon entered the kitchen as Harry was turning over the bacon.
"Comb your hair!" he barked, by way of a morning greeting.
About once a week, Uncle Vernon looked over the top of his newspaper and shouted that Harry needed a haircut. Harry must have had more haircuts than the rest of the boys in his class put together, but it made no difference, his hair simply grew that way -- all over the place.
Harry was frying eggs by the time Dudley arrived in the kitchen with his mother. Dudley looked a lot like Uncle Vernon. He had a large pink face, not much neck, small, watery blue eyes, and thick blond hair that lay smoothly on his thick, fat head. Aunt Petunia often said that Dudley looked like a baby angel -- Harry often said that Dudley looked like a pig in a wig. Harry put the plates of egg and bacon on the table, which was difficult as there wasn't much room. Dudley, meanwhile, was counting his presents.
His face fell.
"Thirty-six," he said, looking up at his mother and father. "That's two less than last year."
"Darling, you haven't counted Auntie Marge's present, see, it's here under this big one from Mommy and Daddy."
"All right, thirty-seven then," said Dudley, going red in the face.
Harry, who could see a huge Dudley tantrum coming on, began wolfing down his bacon as fast as possible in case Dudley turned the table over. Aunt Petunia obviously scented danger, too, because she said quickly,
"And we'll buy you another two presents while we're out today. How's that, popkin? Two more presents. Is that all right''
Dudley thought for a moment. It looked like hard work. Finally he said slowly, "So I'll have thirty ... thirty..."
"Thirty-nine, sweetums," said Aunt Petunia.
"Oh." Dudley sat down heavily and grabbed the nearest parcel. "All right then."
Uncle Vernon chuckled. "Little tyke wants his money's worth, just like his father. 'Atta boy, Dudley!" He ruffled Dudley's hair. At that moment the telephone rang and Aunt Petunia went to answer it while Harry and Uncle Vernon watched Dudley unwrap the racing bike, a video camera, a remote control airplane, sixteen new computer games, and a VCR. He was ripping the paper off a gold wristwatch when Aunt Petunia came back from the telephone looking both angry and worried.
"Bad news, Vernon," she said. "Mrs. Figg's broken her leg. She can't take him." She jerked her head in Harry's direction.
Dudley's mouth fell open in horror, but Harry's heart gave a leap. Every year on Dudley's birthday, his parents took him and a friend out for the day, to adventure parks, hamburger restaurants, or the movies. Every year, Harry was left behind with Mrs. Figg, a mad old lady who lived two streets away. Harry hated it there. The whole house smelled of cabbage and Mrs. Figg made him look at photographs of all the cats she'd ever owned.
"Now what?" said Aunt Petunia, looking furiously at Harry as though he'd planned this. Harry knew he ought to feel sorry that Mrs. Figg had broken her leg, but it wasn't easy when he reminded himself it would be a whole year before he had to look at Tibbles, Snowy, Mr. Paws, and Tufty again.
"We could phone Marge," Uncle Vernon suggested.
"Don't be silly, Vernon, she hates the boy."
The Dursleys often spoke about Harry like this, as though he wasn't there -- or rather, as though he was something very nasty that couldn't understand them, like a slug.
"What about what's-her-name, your friend -- Yvonne?"
"On vacation in Majorca," snapped Aunt Petunia.
"You could just leave me here," Harry put in hopefully (he'd be able to watch what he wanted on television for a change and maybe even have a go
on Dudley's computer).
Aunt Petunia looked as though she'd just swallowed a lemon.
"And come back and find the house in ruins?" she snarled.
"I won't blow up the house," said Harry, but they weren't listening.
"I suppose we could take him to the zoo," said Aunt Petunia slowly, "... and leave him in the car...."
"That car's new, he's not sitting in it alone...."
Dudley began to cry loudly. In fact, he wasn't really crying -- it had been years since he'd really cried -- but he knew that if he screwed up his face and wailed, his mother would give him anything he wanted.
"Dinky Duddydums, don't cry, Mummy won't let him spoil your special day!" she cried, flinging her arms around him.
"I... don't... want... him... t-t-to come!" Dudley yelled between huge, pretend sobs. "He always sp- spoils everything!" He shot Harry a nasty grin through the gap in his mother's arms.
Just then, the doorbell rang -- "Oh, good Lord, they're here!" said Aunt Petunia frantically -- and a moment later, Dudley's best friend, Piers Polkiss, walked in with his mother. Piers was a scrawny boy with a face like a rat. He was usually the one who held people's arms behind their backs while Dudley hit them. Dudley stopped pretending to cry at once.
Half an hour later, Harry, who couldn't believe his luck, was sitting in the back of the Dursleys' car with Piers and Dudley, on the way to the zoo for the first time in his life. His aunt and uncle hadn't been able to think of anything else to do with him, but before they'd left, Uncle Vernon had taken Harry aside.
"I'm warning you," he had said, putting his large purple face right up close to Harry's, "I'm warning you now, boy -- any funny business, anything at all -- and you'll be in that cupboard from now until Christmas."
"I'm not going to do anything," said Harry, "honestly..
But Uncle Vernon didn't believe him. No one ever did. The problem was, strange things often happened around Harry and it was just no good telling the Dursleys he didn't make them happen. Once, Aunt Petunia, tired of Harry coming back from the barbers looking as though he hadn't been at all, had taken a pair of kitchen scissors and cut his hair so short he was almost bald except for his bangs, which she left "to hide that horrible scar." Dudley had laughed himself silly at Harry, who spent a sleepless night imagining school the next day, where he was already laughed at for his baggy clothes and taped glasses.
Next morning, however, he had gotten up to find his hair exactly as it had been before Aunt Petunia had sheared it off He had been given a week in his cupboard for this, even though he had tried to explain that he couldn't explain how it had grown back so quickly. Another time, Aunt Petunia had been trying to force him into a revolting old sweater of Dudley's (brown with orange puff balls) -- The harder she tried to pull it over his head, the smaller it seemed to become, until finally it might have fitted a hand puppet, but certainly wouldn't fit Harry. Aunt Petunia had decided it must have shrunk in the wash and, to his great relief, Harry wasn't punished…..to be continued

Is it over between Kerry Washington and Nnamdi Asomugba

Kerry Washington and Nnamdi were at the White House over the weekend for the Kennedy Centre honor but according to Radar Online, the couple is already separated, and Kerry plans on filing for divorce in the next few months.

"Nnamdi resents her," said the source. "He believes Kerry’s the one who’s given up on their marriage."

Fire destroys 65 shops in Kano market

Kano – No fewer than 65 shops were destroyed by fire in the furniture section of Sabon Gari Market in Kano on Thursday night, an official said.
The Director of Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Balarabe Kabara, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday that the incident, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. affected permanent and temporary structures.
Kabara attributed the fire to negligence but said the agency would meet with the affected traders to ascertain what they lost individually.
“The main cause of the inferno is negligence because people are in the habit of playing with fire, especially now that it is harmattan period,” he said.
Kabara advised the people to avoid unnecessary use of fire as any mistake could lead to fire disaster.
Kabara recalled that seven female students recently lost their lives in fire incidents in two secondary schools in the state and advised school authorities to ensure proper monitoring of students.
Kabara also advised students to desist from cooking and using electrical appliances, especially water heater and pressing iron, in their hostels to avoid fire outbreaks

Ellen DeGeneres Invests And Launches Dance Off In Music Contest App Chosen

Having all your content on TV is a bit like having all your money in oil: it’s still popular, but the next thing is coming and you better diversify. That’s why it’s so smart that talk show host Ellen DeGeneres set up her own Ellen Digital Ventures firm to bring her content and capital to new mediums beyond television.
Today, Ellen Digital Ventures announced that musician competition app Chosen will be its latest investment and partnership. Chosen will now feature Ellen’s Dance Off, a new contest where people can submit videos of themselves dancing and use Tinder-esque swipes to vote on who else is the best dancer. Starting with a freestyle dance off and a themed contest around Missy Elliot’s new song “WTF”, the top dancers in Chosen will be invited to strut their stuff on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Ellen is just the first to make their own game on Chosen, which will open up as a platform next year. That will allow anyone to pick a theme for people to compete around, from singing or dancing to extreme sports or comedy.
“We recognize people are consuming content on smaller and smaller screens and we want to be part of that”, says The Ellen DeGeneres Show producer Andy Lassner. Rather than sticking with its demographic of 25-54 year old women watching TV, Ellen Digital Ventures is helping the celebrities build a younger audience on the next medium: mobile. Producer Mary Connelly explains “The digital landscape is a new digital playground for our wildly creative staff.”
The investment of undisclosed size adds to the $6.5 million raised by Chosen from DCM, Rhodium, and CrunchFund [Disclosure: CrunchFund was started by TechCrunch’s founder].
Chosen’s American Idol-style app launched a year ago to let people play by both performing or judging others. But to prep for the partnership with Ellen, Chosen has simplified its app and refocused on celebrating people’s submissions rather than harsh Simon Cowell-style critiques. Now instead of several confusing game types, Chosen has been boiled down to just performing and voting.
Chosen was founded by former Gracenote, MOG, and Beats Music CEO David Hyman. Now his entertainment industry connections have brought Chosen a powerful way to grow. Ellen will ask her viewers to submit dance videos through the app, and seeing people wild out on stage will surely inspire fans to hit record themselves.
The game is remarkably fun. Each swipe reveals a new dancer shaking it for your praise. It’s a rapid fire way to consume video that has legs long beyond the dance contest format. Simple and addictive, it adds movement to the static Tinder design people already love.
And since Ellen is all about positivity and there’s no way to leave mean comments like on YouTube, Chosen users can boogie without being bullied. You don’t even technically vote against people, but just refresh to see another clip.
The Ellen DeGeneres Show producer Ed Glavin concludes, “The crazier this world gets and the harder it is to turn on your TV and see something pleasant, the more important it is for us to be an escape.

Nokia Closes Its $2.8B Sale Of Here To The Audi, BMW And Daimler Car Consortium

One of the bigger makers of maps and location services used in mobile phones and connected cars has now been taken over by a consortium of car makers. Today Nokia completed its sale of Here to Audi AG, BMW Group and Daimler AG for €2.55 billion ($2.8 billion). The deal was originally announced in August, pending regulatory approval, at an original price of €2.8 billion, “subject to certain purchase price adjustments.”
In the event, those adjustments brought the price down by some €300,000. Moreover, the sale cleared its regulatory hurdles in the U.S., Europe and Asia faster than expected, so the sale has closed ahead of schedule (it was originally going to close in 2016).
The deal puts a final period to a long-winded chapter over the future of the location services and mapping division, which remained a part of Nokia as the rest of its mobile handset business was sold to Microsoft in 2014, and never really grew to be a sizeable portion of Nokia’s revenues.
Nevertheless, the rise of smartphones and connected cars have driven a large potential and actual market for location-based services, and Here, with its rich navigation and mapping data, is one of the biggest players in the space, so when it came on the market it generated a lot of interest.
While there were a number of parties bidding for the company, including Uber and Baidu, ultimately the car consortium won out. This was relatively unsurprising: many of them were already integrated with Here, and owning it outright gives them a lot more flexibility about how they will develop further services in the future.
The three car companies will all hold an equal share in Here, they said today in a joint statement.
The sale also leaves the door open for Nokia to focus more sharply on its networking business, by way of its $16.6 billion acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent, a deal that should close in the early part of 2016, Nokia said today.
There are still question marks over what will happen with Here’s 6k+ staff under the new owners. A conference call later today led by the new owners could shed some light on where Here will go next

Porn Star Nicki Blue Alleges James Deen Sexually Assaulted Her With A Beer Bottle

Each day it seems to get worse.
In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, porn star Nicki Blue alleged that James Deen physically harmed her as well as sexually assaulted her with a beer bottle. The story, like many other stories about Deen, is extremely GRAPHIC and upsetting.
Blue's story begins at a bar where the pair were hanging out following her first porn shoot:
"It was about 11 at night and I was kind of bored. This was before they secured the building so it was open and I went downstairs to get some ice or something. I heard this commotion and I went to see. It was James Deen and some others in the bar having a good time, and they were like 'hey, come join us!'. Everyone was drinking but I wasn't really because I'm not a huge fan of alcohol. Everyone was having a good time and then James Deen got really horny, because guys get horny when they drink, and he knew I was a virgin. He started slapping me on the a** and there was some light fetish play. It got more extreme and there was music playing so it was hard to hear. I started giving him oral sex. It was nice at first, then it got really rough. I kept trying to pull my head up to say something, it was too rough. But he would just push my head back in so I was choking and I couldn't say anything."
Ugh. Sounds horrifying.
Side note: we're a little confused as to what Nicki means when she referred to herself as a "virgin". Perhaps the porn shoot was simulated or didn't involve penetration. Either way, the account is very disturbing!
The porn star went on to elaborate:
"As he was doing it – this is the embarrassing part and why I didn't say anything – he said "oh my God, I have to go to the bathroom" and he p***** in my mouth. 'That was it, I spit it up, I was upset. Then after that, he had the idea of putting the beer bottle up my a**. So that was done."
There really are no words to describe this heinous account.
As for how Blue tried to rectify the situation, she recalled:
"I wrote about my experience with James Deen, saying, 'how can he get away with it' and Kink not only deleted my post but kicked me out so I unable to post in the forum. After that I gave up, I thought 'Whatever, nothing is going to happen. It made me feel really sad because he seemed like such a nice guy. I see him as two-faced now, and having a sadistic, evil side."
Woah. N.B.'s tale of being ignored by peers in the industry is all too common.
The seXXXy lady added:
"When you're an adult actress, especially in BDSM, and you go to a cop and say 'Oh I've been raped by this guy after doing a scene', they are not going to take you seriously, like if you were a normal person I would have said something a lot sooner if I felt people would have taken me seriously but they don't. But then when your stuff gets deleted, it's just hard."
So sad. Every sexual assault victim should be heard regardless of his or her profession!

Fitbit, Apple And Xiaomi Are The World’s Top Wearables Vendors, Says IDC

Xiaomi is the world’s No. 3 wearables vendor behind Fitbit and Apple, according to a new report from IDC that looked at shipment volume in the third quarter of 2015.
This may come as a surprise unless you live in China, where 97 percent of Xiaomi’s wearable gadgets, like the Mi Band, are shipped, but the company has actually ranked in the top three since the beginning of this year. In fact, in an IDC report released in June before shipments of the Apple Watch were included, Xiaomi actually placed second, which means the Apple Watch knocked it down one place.
The Mi Band, Xiaomi’s first wearable, was unveiled last summer and is a pretty basic BLE fitness tracker. It counts steps taken, hours of sleep, and estimates calories burned (a newer model, Mi Band Pulse, also monitors heart rate). One of the keys to its success is its extremely low price. Starting at just $14.99, the Mi Band is an easy way for people to dabble in wearables without wasting too much money if they get sick of them.
According to IDC, market leader Fitbit shipped 4.7 million wearable units in the third quarter, taking a 22.2 percent market share. Apple shipped 3.9 million units, for a 18.6 percent market share, while Xiaomi shipped 3.7 million units, or 17.4 percent of the market.
Fitbit’s shipment volume increased 101.7 percent year-over-year, while Xiaomi’s jumped 815.4 percent, thanks to China’s position as one of the world’s largest wearables market. Fitbit benefited from growth in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as a large order of 335,000 fitness trackers from Target, which gave the devices to its employees for a company-wide fitness program.
